Read more about this lecture

Background: This video lecture has been developed in the context of a larger-scope blended course on “Control of Multidrug-Resistant Organisms (MDROs) in Healthcare Settings”, with the objective of being a stand-alone interactive lecture

The aim of this lecture is to strengthen the capacity of EU and EEA countries regarding healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) due to MDROs in acute care settings and to promote the implementation of appropriate measures. Being able to manage individual and organisational changes utilising knowledge of the behavioural sciences is one of the competencies for infection control and hospital hygiene professionals in the European Union. In this lecture, Prof. Michael A. Borg, from Mater Dei Hospital in Malta, will depict how MDROs prevention and control interventions are affected by health care workers' attitudes due to our human nature, different personalities, and cultural determinants.

Target audience: The target audience for this course includes healthcare professionals from EU/EEA countries with current or future responsibility for the prevention and control of HAIs working at national or local level. Typically, these are mid-career professionals involved in infection control programmes to prevent HAIs at hospital level, such as:

  • Infection control/ hospital hygiene practitioners
  • Hospital physicians/ specialist physicians and other antibiotic prescribers
  • Hospital epidemiologists
  • Clinical microbiologists

Learning objectives: Upon completion of this interactive lecture, you will be able to:

  • Utilise behavioural science (especially the Theory of Planned Behaviour) to understand antibiotic stewardship and infection prevention control (IPC) practices relevant to MDROs.
  • Understand how these practices may be influenced by health care workers’ attitudes arising from their human nature, different personalities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Illustrate and identify interventional opportunities in antibiotic stewardship/ IPC to achieve behavioural changes and implementation of good practices.

Course structure: The training is designed as a non-moderated, self-paced interactive video lecture. It is designed to take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
