Webinar: Current and upcoming point-of-care testing technologies and how they can impact sexual health, particularly for key populations

The overall aim of this online webinar organised by ECDC, EACS and CHIP is to increase EU/EEA countries’ knowledge and awareness of current and upcoming POCT technologies for STIs, and the contexts they can be used in. 

⏳ Duration: 90 minutes.

👥 Audience:  The webinar is aimed toward:

  1. STI network members, including microbiology and epidemiology Operational Contact Points (OCPs) 
  2. STI specialist clinicians
  3. Representatives from the STI community

Online training: Implementing the updated ECDC-EMCDDA guidance on preventing and controlling infectious diseases among people who inject drugs, June 2024

The overall aim of this online training organised by ECDC, European Clinical AIDS Society (EACS) and the Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infections (CHIP) is to strengthen EU/EEA countries’ capacities and capabilities to prevent and control infectious diseases among people who inject drugs.


Dates and duration: 18-19 June 2024 (2 days).


Audience: Participants are nominated by ECDC National Focal Points for HIV, viral hepatitis and STIs. The online training is designed for (i) policymakers and public health/social programmers responsible for developing national strategies, policies, and programmes and (ii) public health and health professionals working with people who inject drugs, including representatives from civil society organisations.


Objectives: After completing this training, the participants should be able to: 

  •  Identify shared opportunities and challenges to implementation of guidance on preventing and controlling infectious diseases among people who inject drugs. 
  • Identify how they can apply the interventions within their context. 


Participation: This course is not open for public enrolment. Participation is through invitation by the national focal point of the respective disease programme which is guided by the framework of collaboration between ECDC and the Coordinating Competent Bodies of Member States.

Face-to-face workshop: Increasing the use of ECDC surveillance and monitoring data - H1 2024

The overall aim of this face-to-face workshop organised by ECDC, EACS and CHIP is to improve the knowledge and technical capacities of public health professionals and civil society organisations working within or across HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at the national/regional level to use ECDC surveillance and monitoring data/reports and tools.

⏳ Duration: 2 days

📌Location: ECDC Headquarters (Stockholm, Sweden)

👥 Audience: National representatives from (i) ministries of health, (ii) public health institutes working in the areas of HIV, viral hepatitis and/or STI, and (iii) civil society organisations working in these areas from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

🔑 Participation: By invitation only.

🎯 Objectives: At the end of the workshop, participants should: 

  • Be familiar with ECDC surveillance and monitoring data/reports and tools; 

  • Have analysed and discussed data gaps in surveillance and monitoring data/reports, barriers, opportunities or challenges; and 

  • Have developed a ‘Data for impact plan’ to identify what existing HIV, viral hepatitis and STI-disease data/reports and tools they plan on using to make the case for action in their country/region, as well as what data gaps remain.

Introduction to the 2023 ECDC-EMCDDA guidance on preventing and controlling infectious diseases among people who inject drugs

The webinar introduces the updated ECDC-European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (ECDC-EMCDDA) guidance on preventing and controlling infectious diseases among people who inject drugs.

Audience: The webinar is designed for (i) policymakers and public health/social programmers responsible for developing national strategies, policies, and programmes, (ii) public health and health professionals working with people who inject drugs, and (iii) representatives from civil society organisations and the community.

  • Describe the six key intervention areas to prevent and control infectious diseases among people who inject drugs according to the updated ECDC-EMCDDA guidance. 
  • Explain why interventions to prevent and control infectious diseases among people who inject drugs should be delivered in line with principles for prevention and service provision. 
  • Describe some models of good practice for community-based testing, linkage to care and adherence to treatment for hepatitis B and C, HIV, and tuberculosis in the EU/EEA.

  • Have an increased knowledge of existing integrated testing guidance, including indicator-guided testing, and why this is important; and

  • Understand how to implement indicator-guided testing in practice.
