Context

Exercise Purple Octagon was an exercise designed to facilitate engagement and to test resilience of communication means and protocols with Member States (MS), international organisations and 3rd countries and to provide an opportunity to evaluate and develop preparedness for public health events at mass gatherings. The exercise was conducted by the Health Protection Agency of the United Kingdom under a framework service contract to ECDC.

Exercise Purple Octagon was the sixth in a series of exercises and was conducted over 2 days, on 16 – 17 September 2009, and Functional Exercise (FX) run continuously, and lasted approximately 30 hours.

An Exercise Planning Group (EPG) made up of staff from the Preparedness and Response Unit of the ECDC and participating organisations / countries representatives, was formed to provide the Exercise Design Team (EDT) from HPA (UK) with guidance for the planning and approval of the exercise documentation and conduct.
