Meet and Greet
by - Friday, 30 October 2015, 11:41 PM

Hello !

My name is Arnold and I am trained in the Netherlands as a public health specialist. My current job is at the Public Health Training section of ECDC in Stockholm. Our group has started in 2015 to set up E-learning as one of the new training activities of the Centre and we decided to start to develop the first E-course with the topic of Scientific Abstract Writing because this requires a skill-set that many public health specialist mention interest in. We have also heard from a number of experienced scientific writers that they would like to use a course like this to practice this skill in English since it is not their native language.

You are warmly encouraged to write here something about yourself, where you are from and what you expect of the course.

Dear all,

Welcome to the 1st official edition of the abstract writing course.

I work at ECDC as instructional designer and e-learning expert. I have an IT background and started working with e-learning in 2006. I was part of the project team who created this course on abstract writing. I'm not an expert on abstract writing and my role here will be to assist you in case you have some technical difficulties with the platform or the materials. I will also be directing content related questions to subject matter experts at ECDC and getting the answers back to you.

Wishes of a great course and looking forward to know you via a short presentation in this forum.

Hi

I´m Piret Väljaots, from Estonia. I studied public health and at the moment I am preparing to write my first article. As starting something is always the most difficult part, I hope to get some good advice and experiences to write an abstract. Hopefully it will encourage me to continue with the whole article later on.

Enjoy the course!

Re: Meet and Greet
by - Monday, 21 December 2015, 4:58 PM

Welcome Piret,

And thanks for sharing the background. It is true that writing an entire article requires many perspectives that will not be fully covered in this course on abstract writing. However some of the concepts of this course will also apply to the approach of writing a full manuscript. ECDC does have course material for writing manuscripts, however these are not yet designed for E-learning.

Hopefully this course will also allow you to get in touch with other participants that have useful experience to share.

Dear all,

My name is Ricardo Mexia and I am a Public Health Doctor and Epidemiologist at the National Health Institute in Lisboa.

I after my Medical degree I did my Public Health training near Lisboa and finished a Masters in Public Health. I also did my Field Epidemiology training by attending EPIET in Oslo, graduating in 2011.

I work mostly in surveillance, particularly in participatory surveillance and mass gatherings surveillance.

I am looking forward to the course, so I can develop further my scientific writing skills, and increase scientific output here at my Department. We actually have a lot of projects and sometimes we feel a bit overwhelmed by the work and therefore communication/writing seems to fall behind.

I also take the chance to wish you all Happy Holidays!

Dear colleagues

I am Valentina Di Gregori, I am medical doctor graduated from the University of Bologna Italy, MSc in Pharmacoepidemiology and Specialist in Public Health. I am working as an Epidemiologist at the Ferrara Hospital (Infection Control)and at the Sant'Orsola University (Microbiology) Hospital  Italy and working at the National Agency for Research Evaluation in Italy.

I am also part of the Core group of the Section for Infectious Diseases Control of European Public Health Association and the Brain infections group of Europe Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

I believe that writing and revising skills have to be trained and upskilled frequently so this why I decided to take part to this e-class though I have already experience in the field. The  Most important clue in my opinion is quality of research but we still  need to train on the methodology so I hope that this course gives us also the opportunity to share and create new thinking on research and its human usefulness not only mere instruments but thoughts and visions.

Thank you

Valentina Di Gregori

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year and best wishes to you all.

My name is Savina, I am from Bulgaria and I started my EPIET fellowship in Poland in September 2015. My bachelor's and master's degrees were in the field of biochemistry and cell biology, with a focus on various pathogens (Pseudomonas spp., hepatitis C and Trypanosoma brucei). I then did my PhD in epidemiology, focusing on hepatitis A. I have some experience with scientific writing, but it does need improvement, and a course focusing on abstracts is great, as abstracts are the first (and sometimes last) thing people read from a paper.

Looking forward to working with you!
